This is a question that I get quite often and I will try to answer it as best as I can. It all goes back to my late friend Joseph as well. We were best friends while in school and one day Joseph arrived with a cool kids motor he had gotten by his father for Christmas. All the kids were in awe and I was proud to be the only kid that Joseph let on his motor. We started riding it quite often, to school and after school and we always took turns. When we got older we started seeing actual motors and immediately we became interested. That’s how a passion was born.

Getting into college

While in college me and Joseph continued to be neighbours as we both stayed at our parents’ place even though we each chose another course. I studied Civil Engineering and Joseph studied Mechanical Engineering. Luckily I found a job to combine with my studies at a construction company. It paid quite well and I was able to save a lot of money, especially for a student. Joseph was less fortunate, although he didn’t really have the time for a job since his course was much harder than mine and he spent a lot of time studying. That’s why I wanted to cheer him up. I saved for two years until I was able to buy an original 1983 Honda CR480R, our favourite motorcycle. This time it was me who lend the motor to Joseph and we spend a lot of time using it.

Never ending passion

Unfortunately, I decided to borrow the motorcycle to Joseph one day when he planned to go on a date with a girl he wanted to impress. As you can imagine, we, like anybody else, always wanted to impress girls while in college and we often helped each other. Although I wish I hadn’t helped him that day. On the way back home from their date, Joseph and the girl collided with a drunk driver and they both died immediately. After that, I was so devastated I delayed my studies by one year as I couldn’t focus. Soon after I noticed that I felt better when I was dealing with motors. Like Joseph was still with me. And I still feel that sometimes, as crazy as it may seem after all these years. But I guess it’s safe to say that motorsport is our never ending passion.

On a lighter note

I just shared this heavy story because I have gotten so many questions about it that it became time to talk. Now that you guys know, I would like to continue on a lighter note. By telling you all the reasons why motorsport is the best hobby in the world. First of all, it’s very accessible. There are options for every age group, financial situation and experience level. You can start as a beginner and work your way up or just become a spectator and enjoy the show. It’s all up to you. Secondly, there are a lot of motorsport events so you never have to wait long for the next race. That’s especially beneficial if you are still learning. You can even take your entire family to many of the events, so it can be a fun day out. Lastly, if you are practicing the sport yourself, you’ll notice that it’s quite physical. You can get in shape by motorsport alone, especially if you practice a high speed variation of the sport. Which is great if you don’t have much time to go to the gym.
